Does Artificial Grass Get Hot on the Costa Blanca?

Yes, in the peak of the day in the peak summer months. The rest of the year it is generally fine. Everything outdoors warms up then, including decking, concrete and tiles. Artificial grass does not hold that heat the way concrete or tiles do, and once shade comes back it is comfortable again much sooner. Our dogs have always loved it. On my last installation I found the cats fast asleep in the sun on the grass before I had even finished laying it. Dogs still should not be left out in the main heat of the day, on any surface. With shade and ordinary common sense, people use these gardens all summer.

This guide goes beyond our short FAQ answer. It covers what heat feels like on Costa Blanca gardens, pool surrounds and terraces, how grass compares with concrete and tiles, and the simple things that keep it comfortable.

Quick answer — does artificial grass get hot in Spain?

  • It is really only the peak summer months, in the peak of the day. The rest of the year is generally fine. Decking, concrete and tiles warm up then too.
  • It does not hold heat like concrete or tiles.
  • Shade and evening use change comfort quickly.
  • For pets and bare feet, use the same common sense you would on any sunny surface: shade, and nobody left out in the worst of the afternoon.

How heat feels on the Costa Blanca

Mediterranean sun

Costa Blanca summers bring strong sun, long days and a lot of reflected light from white walls, pool decks and hard paving. A south-facing strip with little afternoon shade will feel warmer than a garden that sits in building shadow by mid-afternoon. Orientation and what sits around the lawn matter as much as the grass itself.

Artificial grass vs concrete, tiles and natural lawn

Concrete and tiles hold the heat. Once they have baked all morning they stay hot under bare feet long after you would like them to. Artificial grass warms in the same sun, but it does not hold that heat the same way, so it is usually the more comfortable strip to walk on. Natural lawn in this climate brings its own summer problems: watering, brown patches, and a surface that feels dry and spiky. Artificial grass stays green without irrigation. On terraces, that is a common reason people put grass over tiles — they want a surface that does not hold heat the way the tiles do.

What makes a lawn feel warmer or cooler

Direct sun, shade and time of day

An open strip in peak sun is the warmest case. Morning, evening and shaded hours are different. Planning seating, play and the dog's spot where afternoon shade arrives first makes more difference than anything else.  If you have trees or hedges for example around your garden, these can create partial shade which will help reduce heat.

Pets, children and barefoot comfort

Dogs and children use gardens hard in summer. Artificial grass is soft, drains well and stays green without irrigation, which is why so many pet and play areas are done this way. It can still warm up in direct sun. Any outdoor surface does. Dogs should not be outside in the main heat of the day, on grass, tiles or paving. With a shady spot, fresh water and ordinary common sense, it is a surface people genrally enjoy all summer. We supply off-cuts to AKIRA (now called Pepito), the dog sanctuary in Benissa. They use them, and it brings real happiness to their dogs. See artificial grass for dogs and pet applications. We supply off-cuts to AKIRA dog sanctuary.

Pool surrounds and terraces

Pool edges

Pool areas are where this question meets real use. People walk the same strip in wet feet, put chairs down, and cut across from the house to the water. Artificial grass gives a softer, greener surround than extending more concrete or tiles, and it does not hold the heat the way those surfaces do. Drainage through the backing matters, and all of our grasses are suitable around a pool, whether it's chlorine or saltwater. More on artificial grass around pools and pool areas.

Terraces over tiles

On many terraces and balconies we install directly over suitable tiles or concrete. That often means less disruption. Clients choose it to get away from a hard surface that holds the heat, and to have somewhere they actually want to use. It can still feel warm in full midday sun. It does not hold that heat like the tiles underneath. Drainage, levels and access need checking first.

How we help

We have 20+ years supplying and installing premium artificial grass in Spain and 30+ years of professional landscaping experience. Before we recommend a product, we look at the sun on your property, how you use the space, pets and pool edges. On a free site survey we look at orientation, existing surfaces, drainage, access and how you want to live in the garden, then recommend preparation and a Spanish-made grass to suit. Browse our range and installation. See ground preparation and services.

Practical ways to keep it comfortable

  1. Plan shade for the bits you use most — pergolas, sails, planting and the shadow from the house.
  2. Put high-use barefoot paths where afternoon shade arrives first.
  3. Dogs: do not leave them out in the main heat of the day. Shade and fresh water, the same as any sunny garden.
  4. Before summer, give the surface a clean and a check. See how to prepare artificial grass for summer and pre-summer refresh.

Where we fit it

We supply Spanish-made artificial grass for Mediterranean gardens, pools, terraces and pet areas. Comfort on a hot afternoon still comes from shade and how the space is laid out.

FAQs

Does artificial grass get hot on the Costa Blanca?

Yes, in direct sun during the hottest hours, like other outdoor surfaces. It does not hold that heat the way concrete or tiles do, and it comes back sooner once it is in the shade.

Is it hotter than tiles or paving in the same sun?

It does not hold heat like tiles, paving or concrete. It can still feel warm in direct midday sun. People choose it because the hard surfaces stay hot underfoot for longer.

How quickly does it cool down in shade?

Once shade returns, it cools sooner than concrete or tiles that hold the heat.

How do I keep artificial grass comfortable for bare feet in August?

Shade the parts you actually use. A pergola, a sail, or the shadow from the house does more than anything else. Use those paths in the morning and evening when you can. It will still warm in full sun. It will not hold that heat the way a run of concrete or tiles does, so it is usable again much sooner.

Can dogs use artificial grass in summer?

Dogs should not be outside in the main heat of the day. Any surface gets hot then, whether it's grass, tiles or paving. With a shady area, fresh water and ordinary common sense, it is generally fine, and people still have it done because the garden stays green and usable. We supply off-cuts to AKIRA (now called Pepito), the local dog sanctuary in Benissa. They love having them, and it brings happiness to their dogs.

Does grass around the pool get too hot for wet feet?

It can warm in peak sun, like the rest of the garden. It does not hold that heat like the concrete or tiles beside it, which is why people still fit it on the path they walk all summer. All of our grasses are suitable around a pool, so we help you choose one for the way you use the space and make sure the drainage is right.
